Ferro Silicon (FeSi)

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked questions

What ferro silicon grades do you manufacture?

Principally FeSi 75, typically 74–80% silicon, and FeSi 70 at 70–75% silicon. Aluminium, carbon, phosphorus and sulphur maxima are set against your specification.

Should I buy FeSi 75 or FeSi 70?

Compare delivered cost per unit of silicon rather than price per tonne. FeSi 75 carries more silicon per tonne handled, which reduces freight and charging time, but FeSi 70 can work out cheaper per silicon unit depending on the market at the time.

What size do you supply for ladle addition?

Ladle grades are usually 10–50 mm so the alloy dissolves within the tapping window. We also supply 10–100 mm for furnace charging and finer fractions for foundry use. A maximum fines limit is stated on the contract.

Where is your ferro silicon produced?

At our ferro alloys facility in Durgapur, West Bengal, where MLB Group has manufactured since 2007. We export to Europe, the UAE and South Asia.

How should ferro silicon be stored?

Dry and well ventilated. Ferro silicon can evolve gases in damp conditions, particularly when freshly crushed, so keep it under cover, off the ground, and follow the handling guidance on the safety data sheet supplied with each consignment.

Can you supply ferro silicon for foundry rather than steel use?

Yes. Foundry applications generally call for different sizing and tighter control of trace aluminium and calcium. Tell us the application and we will quote the appropriate grade and fraction.
