Cored Wire

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked questions

What cored wire types do you manufacture?

Calcium silicide, solid calcium and calcium iron, carbon, sulphur, ferro titanium and ferro boron wires, in the diameters your feeder requires.

What diameters and fill weights are available?

Commonly 9, 13 and 16 mm, with fill weight specified in grams per metre. Fill weight consistency is what makes your dosing calculation reliable, so we state it with a tolerance rather than as a nominal figure alone.

Why use cored wire instead of adding lump alloy?

Calcium boils around 1,480 °C, well below steelmaking temperature, so lump addition largely vaporises at the surface. A steel sheath carries the reagent deep into the ladle, where ferrostatic pressure holds it in contact with the melt long enough to react.

What sheath thickness should I specify?

Typically 0.2 to 0.4 mm. Thicker sheath survives longer and releases the reagent deeper, which suits deeper ladles and higher feed speeds. We match sheath to your ladle depth and feeder capability.

How much wire do I need per heat?

It follows from your target addition, the fill weight and your actual recovery — calcium recovery is genuinely low and variable. We can work through the calculation with you against your ladle size and practice.

How should cored wire be stored?

Dry and under cover, with stock rotated. Moisture in the core means hydrogen in the steel, so damp storage undoes the benefit of the treatment.
